A homeless man was arrested for sexual assault on a 6-year-old girl in an emergency shelter for Hurricane Michael in Florida, local police said.

Sixty-year-old John Stapleton improperly touched the girl on Thursday at Davidson High School, which was used to house people forced to evacuate during the deadly storm, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office announced. .

A witness told the police that he saw a video of the young victim touching "lewdly under his clothes".

Stapleton confessed that he had touched the girl – but insisted that it was not lecherous.

He was charged with obscene and lascivious molestation of a victim under the age of 12, authorities said.

On Friday morning, 11 people were reported dead as a result of the storm, which was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone.

In Florida, officials have reported four storm-related deaths, including a man killed when a tree crashed against the roof of his home in Greensboro.

Nearly 1.1 million homes and businesses were without electricity from Florida to Virginia early Friday.
