A K-9 officer from Michigan killed after a shootout near a baby shower

A policeman, the K-9, was killed Sunday in the service line after a man armed with a gun in front of a baby shower in Michigan participated in a shooting with officers, according to several reports.

Ax, a K-9 from the St. Clair Shores Police Department, joined the police in responding to a call for an armed man in front of the banquet hall where the party was taking place, WDIV-TV reported.

Police said that he had refused to drop his gun and had finally tried to run by shooting at Ax. The dog died later in an animal hospital.

Officers fought back and fired at the unidentified suspect, who died later, according to the report.

Ax, according to Fox 2, was 4 years old and started serving the department in 2016.

"Thank you for reciting a prayer for your manager and all the St. Clair Shores Police Departments," writes the Macomb County Sheriff's Office in a Facebook message. "We thank you for your service AX, you can rest in peace."

St. Clair Shores is about 13 miles northeast of Detroit.
