PLEASANTON – A large platform carrying several tons of earth was knocked down on Interstate 680 on Friday morning after a multi-vehicle collision, closing all three lanes southbound and significantly disrupting daily commutes, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident was reported around 4:54, just north of Bernal Avenue. The CHP says that about 27 tons of earth have been dumped on the pavement.
According to early reports, a collision involving two other vehicles would likely have prompted the driver of a large platform to turn around to avoid this accident, according to CHP officer Tyler Hahn. One person complained of pain and was transported to a hospital.
The CHP warned commuters to "expect significant delays" and encouraged motorists to find other routes. Hahn said the traffic would be slow for several hours.
Motorists who reported the accident to the CHP said the sedans were traveling at over 100 mph at the time of the incident.
At 6:15, the three 680 lanes were closed.
The CHP encourages motorists to use alternate routes, including Highway 84 via Livermore, Interstate 580 west to Interstate 880 south, or Highway 680 north to Highway 24 in a westerly direction.
