A little beef sold at Target, Sam's Club, Aldi linked to E.coli at Cargill's factory

Buyers of Target, Sam's Club and Aldi are encouraged to throw away some ground beef products purchased from these stores as they may be contaminated with E. coli and return to a Cargill plant last week.

The Food Safety Division of the US Food and Drug Administration has published an updated list of retailers who have received meat products from the Cargill slaughterhouse and packer in Fort Morgan, Colorado.

Last week, Cargill, based in Minnetonka, and the FDA recalled more than 132,000 pounds of ground beef. Initially, the federal agency and Cargill did not know where all the meat had been sold after it was sold to a distributor. Consumers were asked to search for a business number – EST. 86R – found on the ground beef package, in the USDA inspection mark.

The full list of retailers is here and includes Target and Sam's Club stores across the country, as well as Aldi stores in the Midwest, including Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

At least 17 people were sick and one person died in Florida after eating beef from the factory. The 18 cases occurred in July and involved four states: Florida, Colorado, Tennessee and Massachusetts. Most cases occurred in Florida as patients purchased and consumed ground beef from various Publix supermarkets, according to the Centers for Disease Control survey.

The CDC now estimates that the outbreak is over. But the organization advises consumers to check any ground beef products purchased in these stores that may be in their freezer.

All ground beef purchased in these stores are not affected. Consumers are urged to return or dispose of any product bearing the EUT. Number 86R. The investigators say that consumers must call the store where they bought the product to check if their meat is affected. Consumers can also call 1-844-419-1574 for further questions about the outbreak.

Most types of E. Coli live in the intestines of humans and animals and are harmless. But several strains – including E. coli 026, found in Cargill ground beef – are pathogenic and pose serious health risks.

Symptoms usually occur within one week after eating contaminated food. Most people develop diarrhea, often bloody and vomiting. More serious infections can lead to kidney failure.

Cargill said last week that it is conducting internal and external investigations into treatment protocols at the Fort Morgan plant.
