MONUMENT, Colorado – September is Children's Cancer Awareness Month and some local high school kids are coming together to spread the word.
The girls' softball team at Palmer Ridge High School was looking for childhood cancer to honor a special child on Wednesday.
Elysia is seven years old and her Facebook page is called Elysia Warrior Girl and she is a warrior.
In January, she was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma.
An X-ray revealed that the cancer had been detected in his third rib and in his back.
"It's indescribable how difficult it is to hear that kind of news," said Jeff Behan, Elysia's father. "She is following a very intensive treatment program, which is basically every two weeks, as long as she is strong enough to start the next treatment."
Despite all her treatments, Elysia could be a child.
With only chemotherapy treatment, Elysia is preparing to launch the first pitch at Palmer Ridge's Gold Game.
"She talks about it all week, she's really excited about it," Behan said.
Kylie Walker, now a senior, wanted to raise awareness about childhood cancer. It started with the friend of Walker's family who launched the first ball three years ago.
"It's hard for the family and the others too, so it was just nice for the family, to have something that brought them happiness because there were not any." a lot in their life, "said Walker.
"Your personal awareness of this sort of thing changes dramatically when it really becomes a part of your life," Behan said.
For Walker, it's not just awareness.
"I just want to see a big smile and be with us and have a good time," Walker said.
"What's amazing, what makes her laugh and makes her smile, that's really what I'm living these days," Behan said.
"I'm having fun with the team," said Elysia Behan. "When I'm a bigger child, I could come play with them."
"She has everyone behind her," said Behan, holding back tears. "It's amazing."
Although Walker, the organizer of this event, is graduating, she hopes the tradition will continue with other girls on the team.
Their football team is also involved in the Friday night fitness campaign.
