The Cubs are heading to the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, but with three games in their season, they still do not know who or when they will play.
Although the playoffs of the American League are all but settled – the Yankees and Athletics are fighting for the local title in the game of wild cards – the table of the National League is much more vague.
First, the Cubs (93-66) are trying to retain the Brewers (92-67) for the NL Central title. With a one-game lead, the Cubs are hosting the Cardinals this weekend while the Brewers face the Tigers in Milwaukee.
And two NL playoffs are in play: the Rockies and Dodgers are fighting for the West title, and the Cardinals are still alive in the wild card race. Two of these three teams will qualify for the playoffs.
With so many things in the air, here are the Cubs playoff scenarios:
If the Cubs win the Central
They will be seeded in the NL and open their division series on Thursday at Wrigley Field against the winner of the wild card.
If the Cubs and Brewers finish tied for first place
The teams will play a 163 match for the division title on Monday at Wrigley Field. The winner will be seeded at NL and will advance to a division series starting Thursday at his national park. the loser will play in the wild on Tuesday at his national park.
If the brewers win the plant
The Cubs will play in the wild on Tuesday at Wrigley Field against the Rockies, Dodgers or Cardinals. Even if the Cubs lose their last three games, they will become the number 1 wild card. If they win the wild-card match, they will face the Brewers – the seeded NL in this scenario – Thursday in Milwaukee in the first Division match.
