(KMOV.com) – The number of voters who voted by mail rose sharply this week in the St. Louis area.
The St. Louis County election officials said they counted 2,700 postal ballots cast on Monday. This compares to about 2,000 absentee votes on the busiest day before the 2016 presidential election.
"I always vote, I think it's my responsibility to vote as an American citizen, we have the right to do it, we should always vote," said Ted Isaacs.
"I have not had to queue too long," said Carl Scheske.
The County of St. Louis provides four advance polling stations and voters in St. Louis can vote by mail at the office of the electoral commission.
St. Louis County has an electoral turnout of just over 60%, which compares to a turnout in the mid-1940s in the last mid-term election. But they do not know what impact the postal vote will have on voter turnout on polling day.
"It could mean that we will have an even higher turnout, or that it will mean fewer people will vote on polling day, and more and more people are voting before the election, so that remains to be seen, but that is not the case. is interesting anyway, "said Eric Council of St. Louis County Elections.
In Illinois, voters do not need a reason to vote early. St. Clair County election officials told News 4 that they have seen an increase in the number of advance polls since the last mid-term elections in 2014. Fey said the St. Louis County teams are delivering voting materials to the county's 411 polling stations and ensuring that all workers assigned to the polling station staff are prepared.
"We have more than 3,500 election officers in St. Louis County, so we need to train them all and make sure they comply with the procedures," Fey said.
