The perpetrators of the murder of Maltese journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017, by car bomb, have been identified, according to anonymous police sources quoted by the Sunday Times of Malta.

According to sources cited in the report, senior officers reportedly said that a group of "more than two" Maltese nationals had been identified as having ordered his murder.

Three suspects are under arrest for perpetrating the murder and being tried, but the identity of the person who ordered it has remained a mystery.

Caruana Galizia, who died on October 16 at the age of 53, tried to unravel scandals ranging from petrol to money laundering, involving members of the government and organized crime.

His blog also launched very personal attacks against Maltese politicians.

Last month, Matthew, the son of journalist Caruana Galizia, criticized what he called a "system of impunity," claiming he was protecting those who had ordered his assassination.

His son, who believes the killing was ordered by influential figures, said it "would send a terrible lesson if only those who pressed the button to detonate the bomb ended up in jail."

Three men are accused of his murder. The brothers Alfred Degiorgio and George Degiorgio, as well as Vince Muscat, were arrested on December 4 and charged with the murder. Their case is still pending.

The Caruana Galizia family said on Sunday that she was not officially informed by police that the alleged geniuses had been identified.
