A 22-year-old man was charged with murder in the murder of a former student-athlete from Iowa State University, found dead Monday at a golf course in Ames, police said.

Collin Daniel Richards, whose authorities said he had no known address, was charged with first degree murder following the death of Celia Barquin Arozamena, 22, police said Monday. Ames.

Barquin Arozamena, champion of the Big 12 in 2018 and Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year, was found dead Monday morning at the Coldwater Links Golf Course, authorities said. The student in civil engineering was assaulted before her death, police said.

In a statement on TwitterUIS President Wendy Wintersteen said she was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Barquin Arozamena. She was a "talented athlete-athlete and a recognized golfer with a promising future."

"A terrible, tragic and senseless loss," said Wintersteen.

The police fought back at the golf course at 10:24 am for a report of suspicious circumstances after the golfers found a golf bag without anyone on the course being present. The police then found a body "some distance away," police said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the Cmdr of the Ames police. Geoff Huff published some details during a press conference at City Hall, refusing to comment on where the body was found or injuries that the golfer suffered. He called on the public to contact the police if they saw anything suspicious.
