LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Two people died after a Kroger shootout at Jeffersontown on Wednesday afternoon.

Jeffersontown Police Chief Sam Rogers said his department had been informed of the shootings shortly before 3:00 pm in the store located at 9080 Taylorsville Road, near the intersection with Hurstbourne Parkway.

Rogers said that a man entered the Kroger and fired several times at another man in the store. This man died on the scene.

According to Rogers, the suspect then left the store and shot a woman in the parking lot before an armed citizen pulled out a gun and exchanged fire with him. Neither the suspect nor the citizen were hurt in this exchange.

The suspect escaped his vehicle and reached Hurstbourne Parkway, but was detained nearby shortly thereafter.

Several agencies are involved in the ongoing investigation: Louisville Metro Police, FBI and ATF.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer issued a statement Wednesday night:

"I am sorry for this shameful and horrifying incident, and I am sorry for the tragedy caused by people armed with guns who do not respect human life. Over the next few days, we will learn more about what has happened today. For now, I am in mourning with the families of the victims. I ask all members of our community to keep them in their prayers and to pledge to act against gun-senseless violence. "

Several witnesses then spoke of their disbelief following the shooting.

"I was in the aisle of vitamins and … who we believe to be the shooter went by me." said Andrew Butler, who said he witnessed the shooting. "And just 3-5 seconds later, you heard a series of shots from that driveway."

Valerie Chinn, of WDRB, said she saw the body of at least one victim in the parking lot of the scene. An EMT told him that he was shopping when he saw two people shoot at each other. An elderly woman was caught in the crossfire. He said that he had tried to perform CPR, but that the woman had died.

"I know shots were fired here on the parking lot," Butler added. "You can see the windows of the vehicle that are shot down there … There is a corpse out there in the parking lot."

A Kroger's spokesman issued a statement later in the afternoon, confirming that a suspect was in custody:

We are shocked and saddened by the shooting that occurred around 2:30 pm today.
