A man dies in an accident involving several vehicles on the Long Island Expressway, police say

A Selden man was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on the Long Island Expressway in Melville early Saturday morning, Suffolk County police said.

Eric Preto, 31, was declared dead at the scene, police said in a press release. His wife, 29-year-old Gabriella Preto, and their 2-year-old son were taken to hospital for assessment.

At approximately 12:30 pm, Preto was driving a 2016 Nissan East on the central lane of the highway, near Exit 49, in Melville, on Route 110, when he stopped at the back of a vehicle. Mercedes-Benz 2018 driven by Madhava Reddy, 58, of Dix Hills, police said. .

Preto got out of his car to check the damage and talk to Reddy, the police said. As he was getting into his vehicle, Preto was hit by a 2015 Subaru, driven by Jennifer Massaro, 38, of Smithtown.

A 2017 Nissan, driven by Comma's 24-year-old Stephen Raia, then hit Preto's vehicle, police said. Reddy and Massaro were also taken to the hospital for evaluation. Raia was treated on the spot.

On Saturday at the scene of the accident, patrolmen examined three heavily damaged cars while awaiting the arrival of the detectives.

The police seized the four vehicles for a security check. The investigation resulted in the closure of parts of the highway for several hours during the night.
