A man forgives a dog who shot him during a hunting trip

A 74-year-old man who was shot by his dog while hunting in New Mexico claims to have forgiven Rottweiler's 120-pound mix called Charlie.

"It's a good dog," ABC News Tex Gilligan said, recovering in Texas after the accidental shot. "[He] did not want to do it, "he said.

Gilligan was in the New Mexico desert in search of jackrabbits when Charlie, one of three dogs who accompanied him at the time, reportedly caught his paw on the gun trigger and fired a blow that would have touched Gilligan at the back of the driver's seat.

He had three broken ribs, a perforated lung and a broken shoulder bone. "It crossed my ribs and my lung and collarbone on the right side," Gilligan told ABC News. "I had a gaping hole, you know, and a lot of blood there too."

Gilligan first stated that he thought he had been hit by a sniper by far because there was no one around. It was a stroke of luck that he could call 911 too, because he had brought a mobile phone only because of heavy rains. Normally, he says, he does not take a hunt.

It was only when the county sheriff investigated that it was determined that Gilligan had actually been shot by his own dog. "The gun was placed in the truck with the barrel facing upwards, in the direction of Mr. Gilligan," police told ABC News. "The investigation is treated as an accidental shootout."

"I never thought it would happen," said Gilligan, a man of good humor. "It's an interesting story:" a dog killed a man! "
