A native of Jacksonville is in the middle of a long fight against the West Nile virus. Dave Workman Sr. has been fighting the virus for several months while some doctors did not give him much hope of surviving it.
Recently, the Florida Department of Health in Duval County announced that a total of 10 cases were reported this year in Jacksonville.
Dave Workman Sr. leads an active life with his wife Melissa. Her life was turned upside down shortly after a boat trip on the Saint John River two months ago.
Workman told his wife that he did not feel well but their family went on a trip. Melissa says that he began to feel sick after returning home.
"He disappeared and I found him. He was sated, distant, and I thought, it was weird, I have been married to this man for 58 years and I have never seen that, "she said.
The next day, his health deteriorated. A worker went to the emergency room and discovered four days later that he had West Nile virus, as well as meningitis and encephalitis.
Melissa says their family was relieved that a diagnosis had been made, but there was no West Nile virus vaccine.
"They did not give us much hope, but we had hope," she said.
With hope and faith, Workman began supportive treatment for his symptoms.
Both say their trip is a roller coaster. Dave attributes his recovery to Brooks Rehabilitation and his wife.
"She has been with me all the time from the beginning, spending the night at all to help," Workman said.
Melissa documents the entire trip on Facebook.
Dave says there is no timetable for his complete recovery, but both want others to know that there is hope of defeating the West Nile virus with supportive treatment. Melissa also hopes to find support groups where people can help each other while fighting the virus.
"If only one person notices this and says," Wow, my husband, my brother, or someone who has West Nile, we have abandoned him, "do not give up," she said. .
Workman suffers from one of the most serious cases of West Nile virus. The Florida Department of Health has stated that the best way to protect yourself from the virus is to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
