Derek Edward Maas, 28, of Clearfield.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – Police say the actions of a 28-year-old Utah man caused a flight from the Delta in Salt Lake City, Orlando, to land unexpectedly at Will Rogers World Airport.

Clearfield's Derek Maas was intoxicated before boarding the flight and asked Delta Flight 2603 flight attendants for more drinks, according to KFOR News Channel 4, Oklahoma.

Maas then appealed to the observers, according to the newspaper, shouting obscenities and "crushing" a male flight attendant, which led to a fight on board the plane.

The Delta pilot landed in Oklahoma City around 13:40 Friday and Maas was arrested. Police said he was "extremely drunk," according to the KFOR report.

Delta Airlines issued a statement applauding its crew for "its swift action and professionalism" during the "unruly and violent" incident on board.

"The safety and security of our customers and our team are always Delta's top priority."

The flight continued until Orlando without Maas, arriving two hours late, according to Delta.

Maas was assigned to the Oklahoma County Jail for investigation into a public intoxication and the incident is also under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI.
