A Frenchman caught filming a young woman on a Paris street after reprimanding him for making obscene comments was sentenced on Thursday to six months in prison.

The video of a surveillance camera showing a 25-year-old man attacking 22-year-old student Marie Laguerre in front of a café in July became viral after posting the video on social media.

It showed him picking up an ashtray and throwing it, then hitting it in the face.

In his Facebook account of the aggression, Laguerre said that he had used a "vulgar language, in a humiliating and provocative manner" when she had crossed him on the street and that she had told him to "shut up and keep moving away".

On Thursday, the court sentenced the defendant to pay 2,000 euros in damages to Laguerre, forbade him from contacting her and also ordered him to attend classes on the gender-based violence and violence between couples.

He also decided that he will reoffend in the next three years, he will have to serve another six months imprisonment.

The accused, who has already served a prison sentence for procuring and violence against his mother, admitted to being physically assaulted but denied the obscene remarks.

"There is not a man who has not spoken to a woman in the street," he defended, saying that he was content to compliment Laguerre for his red dress and accusing the judge of "fussing".

Reacting to power, Laguerre hailed her as "balanced" and said she was particularly pleased that her attacker had been instructed to attend a class against sexism.

The attack made headlines around the world, triggering a surge of solidarity with Laguerre.

Since then, she has created a website on which we are "harassed" to collect similar stories of street harassment.

In August, French lawmakers passed a new law against gender-based violence, which makes street parody a crime punishable by an immediate fine.

The law covers behaviors, including comments on the appearance or clothes of a woman, calls to chat, intrusive questions, unwanted follow ups and "upskirts" – taking pictures under the dress of a woman without his knowledge.
