A man received a $ 4.6 million compensation after a ship's doctor ordered him an inappropriate medication, causing a reaction that necessitated the amputation of the man's arm.
Ilija Loncar, a 30-year-old Serb waiter aboard the Norwegian Breakaway, went to visit doctor Sebastian Campuzano after experiencing flu-like symptoms, including nausea. But rather than relief, the employee eventually lost a limb.
Campuzano, described in court documents as being young and inexperienced, had been working for the cruise company for a few months, the Daily Business Review legal information website reported. The doctor gave Loncar the antihistamine promethazine, which the court heard said had injected a "huge" dose into Loncar's right arm over a short period of time.
The waiter, who is also a skilled carpenter, immediately reported a burning sensation in the arm, but Campuzano continued the treatment, regardless. A few hours later, the arm became black and blue as gangrene settled and tissues died.
Lawyer Thomas Scolaro, based in Miami, represented Locar in court. He argued that the drug used was unsuitable for his client's illness and that the intravenous injection method used was incorrect because it should be administered intramuscularly in the buttocks. He also suggested that the 25 milligram dose was unnecessarily important.
According to Scolaro, Campuzano "administered the wrong medicine, the wrong dosage by the wrong way to the wrong injection site, and it was administered at the wrong time and by the wrong method," news.com reported.
"They gave [Loncar] the most dangerous type of medicine that they can give to treat this very simple and common problem that can be treated with a very light and easy medication: Zofran, "added Scolaro. "That's all they had to do."

He noted that the US Food and Drug Administration had already issued warnings because the drug tended to overwhelm vascular walls and damage tissue. The organization has recorded "many mediated amputations" related to the drug.
The lawyer described the decision as "taking a howitzer to destroy something while just taking a small BB gun and that would do the same thing." The howitzer will destroy everything in its path. It was excessive. He suggested that 6.25 milligrams were enough, far below the 25 milligrams used.
At that time, the ship was sailing on the east coast of the United States, but Norwegian did not request an emergency airlift for Loncar, even as its condition deteriorated. Compensation of $ 4.6 million was awarded for Loncar's mental anguish, loss of ability to enjoy life, loss of earning capacity, aggravation of pre-existing conditions, inconvenience, humiliation, scarring and disfigurement.
Scolora attributed her suffering to "deliberate, outrageous and outrageous violations" by Campuzano and Norwegian Cruise Lines staff. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
