A 46-year-old man was shot dead Friday morning by police while executing a search warrant related to The death of a 5-year-old girl on Thursday night, police said.

Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood said the police "when entering the site, they observed an armed man. The suspect lifted a gun and the police fired shots.

But furious family members of the unidentified man said at the scene that he had nothing to do with death and told the police who was conducting a search at 4:50 am in a scene in the neighborhood. 3200 Evergreen.

"I slept and when they came. All I heard was a big boom, then they burst into the house and fired, "said McKayla Coleman, 19, who was in the house upstairs. She said that the person killed by the police was his sister's uncle, who was on the couch down the house.

"When we went down, he was on the ground and they did not tell us what was wrong with him," she said.

Late Thursday, investigators said that a suspect entered a house in Lyndon, near the place where the man was killed and opened fire before escaping. The 5-year-old girl and her mother were shot dead. The girl was taken to a hospital where she died as a result of her injuries. His mother was hospitalized in a serious condition on Friday morning.

Several other people inside the house during the shooting were not injured, the police said.

Kirkwood said police chief James Craig could speak to reporters about the shootings later on Friday.
