A man suspected of killing Angela Simmons's ex-fiancé is surrendering

Less than a week after the shooting death of Angela Simmons's ex-fiancée, Sutton Tennyson, in Atlanta, the man behind the murder surrendered.

Michael Williams of Atlanta went to the local police on Wednesday afternoon. His lawyer, Jackie Patterson, told PEOPLE that he had accompanied his client to the Atlanta Police Headquarters and that once there, he had informed the detectives not to interview Williams. .

After the 44-year-old man was arrested, the police charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and murder, confirms PEOPLE.

On Saturday, shortly before 5 pm, Tennyson, 37, was shot outside his home after an argument with another man that allegedly took place. He died when the police arrived after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

Local police told people that after firing several shots, the suspect then "left the scene by car".

Williams' lawyer says his client denies all allegations and intends to fight the charges and prove his innocence.

"We are fighting vigorously against this case, until a jury trial," Patterson told People, noting that murder cases usually take one to three years to reach a verdict. "It will be a long process."

On Sunday morning, Simmons paid an emotional tribute to her young son's father. Sutton Joseph, 2.
