BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Police in Alabama said that a masked gunman who had opened fire in a McDonald's restaurant had been shot and killed by a customer who was leaving with his two sons.

Birmingham Police Sgt Bryan Shelton told local media that the armed client and one of his minor sons had been injured during the Saturday night shootout. He added that the shooter had died after being taken to the hospital.

Police said the father and his sons were leaving the restaurant while the director was closing for the night when the masked man burst inside and started firing.

The police did not immediately identify the murdered gunman or the client who shot him.

A McDonald's employee, Markus Washington, told WBRC television that he had heard more than 15 shots while he was hiding in a freezer.

Washington called the client armed "my hero".
