Two other people were infected with measles in Lakewood after being exposed to a highly contagious virus from a traveler who introduced it to the country last month, the New Jersey Department of Health said.

The department warned residents Thursday that the two unidentified people may have infected other people between October 25 and October 30 at the following locations in Lakewood:

* NPGS, 231 Main Street on October 25 between 9am and 12pm. and the 29th of October between 14:15 and 16:45

* Pizza Plus, 241 4th St., October 28th between 12:30. and 15:30

The two people developed symptoms after being infected by another unidentified person after international trips to Israel and Ocean County between October 13 and 21, the department said in a statement.

Public health officials said they were considering a "measles epidemic" and were working with the Ocean County Department of Health to identify any other potential places the person could have visited and announced that they would inform the public as needed.

The ministry asked anyone visiting the places listed to call a doctor "immediately".

"Anyone who suspects an exposure is asked to call a health care provider before going to a doctor's office or emergency department," said the Department of Health. "Special provisions can be made for assessment while also protecting other patients and medical staff from possible infections."

People can also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person. Anyone who had not been vaccinated or had not had measles was at risk if exposed.

According to the Department of Health, the symptoms of measles include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. In addition, it can cause more serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
