A 20-year-old trumpet player from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln brass band was killed in an accident involving two vehicles Friday night in Lincoln, authorities said.
Five others were injured, but their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
The person killed in the accident was Tyler Butterfield, 20, from Norfolk, Nebraska. Rescue measures were taken at the scene of the accident, but without success, the police said. Butterfield was declared dead there.
Among the wounded were two other UNL trumpeters: Jenna McCoy, 19, of Hickman, Nebraska, and Eliseo Torres, 18, of Bellevue.
The three men were traveling together in a 2005 blue Corolla Toyota driven by McCoy, police said.
Band members and others were struggling with the loss of Butterfield and the others injured as the Huskers were playing Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. United Chancellor Ronnie Green and Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts were among those who expressed sympathy for social media.
Waltrivelish Watson, 29, Vandcordeyah Watson, 26, and Melvin Hite Jr., 25, all of Lincoln, were injured in the collision of two cars. According to the police, they were traveling in a 2016 blue Dodge Charger driven by Waltrivelish Watson.
The accident was reported at 10:35 pm. Friday near South 10th and Arapahoe Streets in Lincoln.
The Charger was heading south on 10th Street as the Corolla attempted to turn left north on a 10th private road when the cars collided, investigators said.
