An American soldier was killed and two others wounded on Saturday in what the US-led coalition described as an "apparent internal attack."

"Injured soldiers, who are in a stable state, are currently being treated," said a statement from the NATO Resolute Support Mission. "The incident is under investigation."

Details of the attack were rare.

The Taliban did not claim responsibility for the attack, but acknowledged it in a message on its official chain of telegrams. The attack took place at Tarinkot Airport, in the southern province of Uruzgan, and was conducted by a member of the Afghan security forces, he said.

It is unclear what happened to the shooter. the deceased would not be identified publicly for 24 hours in order to give the officials time to notify the next of kin.

The Taliban are fighting US-led NATO forces to try to restore their version of strict Islamic law in the country. A US-led campaign turned the tide in 2001. Efforts to impose a ceasefire in the region have been largely unsuccessful.

Last year, the United States added thousands more troops to their forces in Afghanistan. and advise Afghan forces and carry out anti-terrorist missions against the Islamic State and other militant groups.

As in other areas of the war, Afghan units suffer more heavily than coalition units from internal attacks. According to a Pentagon report, there were 47 so-called "green-on-green" attacks, or incidents where Afghan soldiers turned to their side, until this year.
