A surprised Mexican couple in possession of dismembered human remains in a landau could have killed up to 20 women, a prosecutor said Monday.

The man confessed to 20 murders, but gave details including the names of only 10 victims, said Alejandro Gomez, chief prosecutor of the State of Mexico, located north and west of Mexico City. The couple was caught last week in Ecatepec, in the northern suburbs of the capital.

Gomez told Radio Formula that the man seemed proud of these murders; there were signs that he was suffering from a personality disorder and his mother and an old girlfriend.

"What has seemed macabre, it is that this person mentioned 10 cases in which she gives details, the names of the victims, he gave us the clothes that they wore to the 39th time, "said Gomez. "He seemed happy with what he had done."

His companion has apparently helped attract women but may have played a submissive role.

Police placed the couple under surveillance after phone records showed that they had had contact with three missing women. On Thursday, the police surprised them coming out of a house with a pram carrying plastic bags containing pieces of dismembered human bodies that both men intended to dispose of in a vacant lot at proximity.

Police said that they had gone to the field and found more body parts, but they were in such poor condition that forensic tests will be needed to identify them.

Police said the couple admitted to having disposed of other bodies in the same way; Gomez said Monday that investigators had found dismembered remains in two houses.

Gomez said the man admitted to having sexually abused some victims before killing them. Most were single mothers and the couple had apparently attracted their victims with cheap baby clothes.

The couple, whose names only included the first name in a police statement, also confessed to having sold one of the babies of the deceased woman aged 2 months to another couple. The baby was found and the other couple was arrested.

Mexico City, bordering Mexico City to the east, north and west, has been the victim of a wave of female killings in recent years.
