A Michigan police dog killed in a shootout that left a dead man

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI – City officials say a police officer, the K-9, Ax, died in a shootout on Sunday, according to WXYZ.

German Shepherd, age 4, and his coach were among the officers who responded to the call. A man with a gun was reported near the Lakeland Manor Banquet Hall in the 26000 block of Harper Avenue, reported Click On Detroit. There would have been a baby shower there at the time.

When the police arrived, a suspect escaped from the police and Ax was used to follow him. The dog was shot. The police fought back. The suspect was shot and died later, the station reported.

The Macomb County Sheriff's officials resumed the investigation.

The dog, obtained from Germany, began training with the St. Clair Shores Police in 2016.

His name was awarded to the memory of SEAL Marine Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Axelson of California, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005 during a Taliban ambush, according to the St. Clair Shores Sentinel.
