(WXYZ) – A Michigan reporter was fired after being intercepted by a voice mail. She hoped the Republican candidate for Senator John James would lose the election.

In a statement posted on the Huron Daily Tribune website, Kate Hessling, editor-in-chief, said journalist Brenda Battel was fired Monday night after the voice mail. The newspaper is in Bad Ax, Mich.

Battel called James' campaign to request an interview and did not hang up.

In a video published by James' campaign, Battel is heard: "Dude, if he beats her … Jesus, Fucking John James, that sucks, I do not think it's going to happen."

Hessling confirmed in her message on the website that voice mail was legitimate.

"I listened to the voice message left by Brenda Battel in Mr. James's campaign and I find no reason to defend that behavior." The employment of Brenda Battel was immediately fired, "Hessling said. "The Huron Daily Tribune sincerely apologizes to Mr. James and the public, these statements do not represent the views of Tribune as a whole, nor those of a responsible reporter."
