FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (KFTA) – The United States has been seeing a mild influenza season since the beginning of the year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza activity was minimal in 49 states, the District of Columbia and New York City last week.
Friday's CDC report included a pediatric death – confirmed by the Florida Department of Health.
For the elderly, the CDC combines estimates of deaths based on pneumonia and influenza.
The agency reports that 5.6% of the deaths that occurred during the first week of October were due to pneumonia and influenza. This rate is lower than the normal rate for this time of year.
The total number of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases for the season is 447.
Of course, this does not include people with flu who do not consult a doctor.
Visits to the doctor for flu-like illness are also below normal.
