A 24-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday for fatally stabbing her 70-year-old neighbor in the apartment of the elderly woman, the Upper West Side, police said.

The woman arrested, Anya Johnston, 24, lives on a floor above the apartment where the victim, Susan Trott, was found dead earlier this month, deeply injured in the neck.

Ms. Johnston has been charged with murder and burglary. Police said she had undergone a psychiatric evaluation in a hospital before her arrest.

No weapons were found at the scene, but police said they searched Ms. Johnston's apartment and recovered evidence related to the homicide. There was no sign of forced entry.

Eric Boscia, a long-time friend of Ms. Trott, said that Mrs. Johnston lived with her mother on the 15th floor of a pre-war building located on West End Avenue, between the 94th and 95th streets. They knew Mrs. Trott, he said.

Ms. Trott, a long-time writer for advertising agencies, lived alone in an apartment on the 14th floor. On October 21, the police found her body fully clothed in her room. A trail of blood is directed towards the room. The coroner's office stated that she had died as a result of a wrist neck injury.

Mrs. Trott was an eccentric character, known for her love of animals. She angered some of her neighbors, who complained that her habit of feeding birds and squirrels attracted rats. Before her death, Ms. Trott confided to friends that she had received threats and that other residents of the building had harassed her.
