An experienced paratrooper died Sunday after his parachute failed to open properly during a jump to the Lodi Parachute Center, authorities said.

The woman was using her own skydiving equipment when it was malfunctioning, said Ian Gregor, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, who is investigating the incident.

Gregor said the agency's investigations into skydiving accidents were generally limited to determining if the parachute was properly packed by the appropriate person.

The San Joaquin County coroner's officials were also sent to the center to investigate the death, said Dave Konecny, a spokesman for the sheriff's department. He had no additional information.

Bill Vause, who answered the phone at the skydiving center, said he did not have information about the accident, but said he would provide a statement on Monday.

Skydiving deaths are rare but not unknown. In January, a 27-year-old Canadian paratrooper died after a collision with another jumper and a fall on the roof of a house in Perris.

Last year, the United States Parachute Assn. has recorded 24 fatal skydiving accidents in the country on about 3.2 million jumps, according to its website.

In 2016, he recorded 21. That year, a skydiving instructor and his first jumper were killed near Lodi when a parachute could not open during the jump.
