A Pittsburgh Steelers player honors victims of an attack at the synagogue with crampons "Stronger Than Hate"

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger donned custom-made clubs in tribute to the victims of the Saturday mass shootings at the Tree of Life synagogue.

The shoes were adorned with the words "stronger than hate" and included a reinvented version of the NFL team logo, featuring the Star of David.

Roethlisberger and his wife Ashley Harlan are apparently close friends with former Steelers community relations director Michele Rosenthal, the sister of two men killed in the bombing.

Cecil and David Rosenthal – 59 and 54 respectively – were among the 11 dead when an armed gunman opened fire on the Pittsburgh synagogue on 27 October.

"To say that all members of the Jewish community of Pittsburgh are aware is not even a distant exaggeration," said Jeffrey Solomon, another faithful member of Tree of Life, at The New York Times. "They have both been active participants in so much of life."

Roethlisberger, along with several other Steelers players, attended the brothers' funeral last week.

The Steelers battled the Baltimore Ravens Sunday at 1 pm AND.
