A plane disappears off the coast of South Carolina, according to the FAA

A Piper PA-31 Navajo plane was reported missing Thursday off the coast of South Carolina, the Federal Aviation Administration announced.

A plane was missing Thursday while he was heading to the Bahamas from South Carolina. Researchers and rescuers were investigating to determine its location.

The Piper PA-31 Navajo, a twin-engine aircraft, left Robert. F Swinnie Airport in Georgetown County, Fox affiliate WHNS-TV reported.

The plane disappeared from the radar around 11:30 am and disappeared about 110 km east of Charleston, the US Coast Guard announced. The aircraft reported "an emergency flight, a loss of contact on the radar and informed the [Air Force Rescue Coordination Center.]

The Coast Guard said that searches would continue until Thursday night by boat, while planes would join them at first light on Friday morning.

The FAA will not confirm the registration or ownership of the aircraft until it is located, reported WHNS-TV.

It was not known immediately how many passengers or crew were aboard the plane.

Several aircraft and military vessels participated in the initial search on Thursday.
