A man armed with a rifle and a handgun was shot dead by police when he opened fire outside a banquet hall in St. Clair Shores on Sunday night, authorities said. A police dog was also killed during the incident.

The incident occurred outside Lakeland Manor, at 26211 Harper Ave., near 10 Mile Road, police reported St. Clair Shores in a press release.

Officers had responded to Lakeland Manor after receiving calls from a man carrying a rifle in front of the lobby where about 70 people were inside, police said.

"Upon arrival of the agent, a man corresponding to this description was observed outside the banquet hall," says the press release. "The man ignored several requests from the officers and tried to flee on foot."

The ministry's "ax" K-9 was deployed and the suspect shot him with a handgun, according to the press release. The police fired back and hit the suspect, who was taken to a hospital in the area where he was pronounced dead, the police said.

Ax was taken to an animal hospital where he was also pronounced dead.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office has resumed the investigation, according to the press release. The sheriff's office confirmed to the free press that he was investigating the shooting, but declined to give further details.

The sheriff's office posted on Facebook, "saddened to learn that Ax, a K-9 of St. Clair Shores was killed in the performance of his duties tonight. Prayer for his Master and all the officers of St. Clair Shores Department.We thank you for your service AX.You can rest in peace. "

According to the St. Clair Shores Police Department page, Ax was four years old and had been in the department since 2016.
