A Chicago police officer, two other people and a suspect are in critical condition after a shootout at a local hospital Monday afternoon.

Anthony Guglielmi, communications manager of the Chicago Police Department, said on Twitter that the officer had been seriously injured during the incident at the Mercy Hospital and Medical Center about 26 blocks south of the Chicago loop.

Two other people and the alleged gunman were also in critical condition following the shooting around 3:30 pm, authorities told NBC WMAQ.

A witness, James Gray, told the WMAQ that he had seen at least one woman shot near the hospital.

Gray said he saw a man and a woman talking to each other before the man pulled his gun, fired at the woman and then began shooting at other people in the hospital.

"Once in, he just started shooting at random," said Gray. "It looked like he was turning around and pointing at people at random."

After the shooting, the police conducted a methodical search of the hospital, tweeted Guglielmi earlier, while the authorities had warned the public to avoid the area.

A Chicago fire department source told WMAQ that the hospital had been partially evacuated.

Mercy Hospital is approximately 26 blocks south of the Chicago Loop.
