A Florida police officer's camera captured a man thrown 30 feet from a bridge and into a river on Sunday.
In the video broadcast by the Daytona Beach Police Department, a policeman passing through the Main Street Bridge in Daytona Beach spots a man, identified by police as Derrick Goodin, who throws another man into the Halifax River . floor.
The officer is heard shouting at Goodin to be on the floor several times before he bends and is handcuffed. Goodin claims that the victim "assaulted his property" and that he felt threatened. He told the officer that the victim had jumped over the bridge.
Goodin and the victim, Anthony Mascaro, engaged in a fight, police said. Goodin threw Mascaro 's face on the bridge first, the police said.
Mascaro defended a woman, identified as Stephanie Ellis, who had been approached by Goodin before the fight, the police said. According to the arrest report, Ellis told the police that she had quarreled with Goodin following an "exchange of funds" and that he had hit her in the face. Mascaro then tried to intervene, leading to the fight.
Mascaro told the police that he had swam up to a pylon and that another person picked him up in a rowboat. Police said he had a laceration under his right eye and refused to receive medical attention.
Mascaro did not want to complain, but the police said that Goodin had been charged because throwing someone over the bridge "could have caused a serious injury or fatality".
Police said the bridge was about 30 feet above the water and that there were "multiple pylons and maintenance cats" underneath.
Police said Mr. Goodin was charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm, a battery of offenses and a violation of peace / disorder.
