CENTERVILLE – A police officer from Centerville died Tuesday from a motorcycle accident in Syracuse last month, when he was not on duty, authorities said.

Centerville police officer Jason Read, 40, died in a hospital, according to Centerville police lieutenant Zan Robison.

Read had suffered serious injuries after being involved in a motorcycle accident on September 23, while he was not on duty, according to Robison. He added that Read had been transported by helicopter to Ogden's McKay-Dee Hospital and appeared to be recovering well before Tuesday.

Read joined the Centerville Police Department in 2005. He was currently a police officer and field training officer at the time of his death, Robison said. Read had also held the position of kindergarten to grade 9 officer for three years and had also worked for the department's problem-oriented police unit during his tenure with the department.

"The REAL agent had an incredible memory for names, faces, license plate numbers and other important information that made him a very effective agent," the department said in a statement. . "Agent Read has received many awards and decorations and has had a positive influence on many of the lives he has served in the community as a police officer."

Read leaves behind a woman and three children, added Robison. The funeral had not been arranged yet Tuesday afternoon.
