A premature baby dies of a bacterial infection, prompting a survey at the University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey

NEWARK, N.J. – Health officials are investigating bacterial infections in the neonatal intensive care unit of the University Hospital of Newark, New Jersey, following the death of a premature baby. The state health department has discovered four cases of Acinetobacter baumannii in the hospital since 1 October.

The baby was carrying the bacteria and was transferred to another facility where he died. The exact cause of death is the subject of an investigation due to aggravating medical factors.

The bacteria can cause pneumonia or serious infections of the blood or sores.

The health department said it found "major deficiencies in infection control" at the hospital and ordered a correction plan.

The cases are unrelated to a virus that infected nearly two dozen patients and killed seven children in a long-term care facility in Haskell, New Jersey. This epidemic of adenovirus was especially deadly because the children at the Wanaque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center all had severe disabilities or other medical conditions that made them vulnerable to serious complications.
