A prominent religious scholar and former senator Maulana Samiul Haq, also known as the Taliban's godfather, was murdered on Friday during a targeted attack on Rawalpindi, Pakistani media reported.

Confirming the incident, the son of Jamiat's leader Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-S) said his father had been stabbed to death while he was resting in his room, Geo TV said.

Addressing to the TV channel, Hamidul Haq said that Maulana Samiul was not able to participate in the protests against the acquittal of Asia Bibi by the Supreme Court in a case of blasphemy. "His driver Haqqani was out. Upon his return, he saw that Maulana Sami was lying in her bed in a pool of blood. He was no longer alive, "his son told the chain.

Maulana Samiul (82) was the head of the Darul Uloom Haqqania Islamic religious seminary in Akora Khattak, a town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The chairman of JUI-S in Peshawar also confirmed the death of the leader following an assassination attempt in Rawalpindi.
