An Afro-American father and son say that a racist note was left in their upscale hotel room while they were on vacation in Sarasota, Florida, during a holiday of July 4th.

Frank Davis, President and CEO of the Horizon Group, was staying at the Art Ovation Hotel with his son Michael when they were leaving for breakfast and shopping.

They came back to find the hateful note left in a lamp next to the bed, reported ABC News affiliate WWSB. 19659002] "You are a n — r," notes the report,

Davis says it's been decades since he's receiving similar and derogatory comments.

"It's something in 2018, you do not expect that kind of thing," he told WWSB

He reported the incident to General Manager of the hotel and filed a report with the local police.

The Davises rejected the hotel 's offer of a free night because they feared for their lives.

"Who knows what other kinds of actions this person who clearly knew we were there was able to," Davis said. "That's why we decided to move and find additional accommodation for the rest of our stay."

Davis believes that the note was left by someone with access to his room, perhaps an employee of the hotel. Simone apologized to the Davis family and added that "allegations like this are of great concern to us".

The hotel is investigating the incident, according to the report.
