A brush fire grew rapidly in the foothills north of Fontana on Tuesday night, with flames sometimes spreading to the properties of neighboring homes.
Firefighters in San Bernardino County reported being on the spot near the intersection of Sierra and Riverside Avenues, just above the Sierra Heights area, shortly after 10 pm. It is not known exactly when the flames broke out.
The fire reached 20 acres in 15 minutes, the agency said.
He was nicknamed the Sierra Fire.
The Rialto firefighters and crew members of Cal Fire San Bernardino also responded to the call.
Aerial images of the scene showed two large patches of flames near the 15 Freeway, not far from the residential neighborhoods.
Authorities said no evacuation was ordered, although firefighters could be seen smothering embers that had entered bushes and trees outside the town. At least two houses located near Riverside Avenue.

Fire officials said they were positioning themselves to protect homes.
A video taken from the ground showed embers carried by the wind to spread flames on dry grass, and the authorities confirmed that the winds of Santa Ana contributed to the speed of propagation.
Earlier Tuesday, winds in the fire zone were recorded at a speed of 56 mph, according to the report. National Meteorological Service.
Fire officials in Anaheim said local residents said they could smell the smoke, which had probably been transported from Orange County by the Sierra Fire.
A red flag warning remains in effect over much of southern California until 5 pm. Wednesday.
Fire officials would continue to fight the fire overnight. Seven firefighting crews, 26 engines, three bulldozers and a sheriff's patrol helicopter participated in the intervention, authorities said.
