A report created by Dr. Eileen de Villa, Medical Officer of Health of Toronto, was presented yesterday to the Toronto Board of Health. In this document, the author recommends decriminalization of all drugs for personal use. The council should now urge the Canadian government to reconsider its drug policy
Drug use should be treated as a public health problem
In his report, Dr. de Villa states that it would be much more beneficial Canadian society if drug use would not be treated as a criminal offense, but rather as a public health problem. It also strongly encourages the City of Toronto to influence the government of North America to change the way it addresses the problem of drug use.
The Board of Health's reaction to the report
After receiving the board of health and analyzing the report, the organization decided to urge the federal government to organize a special working group, whose the main responsibility would be to find the best possible solution to the problem of drug use. Such a team should thoroughly investigate the legal regulatory options for all drugs found in Canada, consistent with the approach of "drug use as a public health problem".
According to Health Canada, the North American Government has no intention of legalizing or decriminalizing all drugs, at least not in the near future
The Drug Problem Facing Canada
As Dr. Eileen of Villa said, his report was an answer to the national problem of opioid use. In 2017 alone, the City of Toronto recorded 303 deaths caused by an opioid overdose. This figure represents a terrifying increase of 63% over the previous year.
