A senator asks the court to declare the order of arrest of Duterte illegal

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino senator who has fled to the legislature to avoid an arrest order by President Rodrigo Duterte has asked the Supreme Court to declare the move illegal.

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV is a fierce critic of Duterte. In a petition on Thursday, he told the high court that Duterte's proclamation canceling his 2011 amnesty as a former rebel military officer and ordering his arrest is based on "big lies".

The arm wrestle collapsed while Duterte is visiting the Middle East.

The Ministry of Justice said that Duterte had annulled Trillanes' amnesty because the senator had not filed a petition and admitted guilt for his role in coup attempts. Trillanes showed documents and press articles refuting Duterte's claims.
