A date has been set for the eighth and final launch of a set of Iridium NEXT satellites.
The launch is scheduled at 8:38 am on December 30 at Vandenberg Air Force Base. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will carry satellites in orbit.
In January 2017, Iridium launched a campaign to replace its entire communications satellite network with 75 new satellites.
Iridium-8 will complete this mission, but it is getting closer to the company's goal of sending all the new satellites into space by the end of the year.
It took a while, but we finally have a schedule for the final launch of Iridium NEXT! December 30, at 8:38 am, local time – we will have the satellites, SpaceX assures us that the rocket tested in flight will be ready, and VAFB is ready to celebrate the new year with us! #ThePartyWillBeEpic pic.twitter.com/vQPPeSKm0P

YOU CAN HELP CREATE A SOUNDTRACK
Iridium-7 was the first time the company had released a custom Spotify playlist that coincided with the launch. It included songs by AC / DC, Elvis Presley, Demi Lovato and others, and aimed to reflect what viewers of webcasting were seeing.
For the launch of Iridium-8, the company takes into account the public's suggestions when creating its next reading list.
There are some guidelines. Suggested songs should:
- Avoid blasphemy, explicit words or graphic language
- Avoid clichés (Rocketman, for example)
- Refer to what you are viewing on the screen, at the "Iridium Story" or at their activities.
- Represent a wide range of music / artists / bands
- Serve an ode to a relevant person, place or event
- Represent a certain level of irony if they do not fall into the other categories
- It was not used in the Launch 7 playlist. Click here to see the Iridium-7 soundtrack
Iridium says that it will allow an exception to the "avoid clichés" rule.
