CLEVELAND – The former Ohio judge, Lance Mason, who was expelled from the court and served a prison sentence for violently assaulting his then wife, was arrested on charges of stabbing her fatally.

The incident occurred at Aisha Fraser's home in the 17,000 block of Chagrin Blvd., Shaker Heights, Saturday. Fraser's boyfriend told WKYC that Fraser owned the house and rented it to Mason's sister. Fraser was reported to have dropped off the couple's children when she was killed by Mason, who would be waiting at home.

In the 911 call, a woman who identifies as Mason's sister tells the dispatch that he admitted to attacking his ex-wife.

"He said that he stabbed her … and that she's dead," she was heard at the call.

Fraser's body was found in the alley and sources told WKYC that Mason had apparently tried to commit suicide after his death.

Court documents indicate that Mason drove the 2015 Audi SUV from his ex-wife in a police vehicle while he was trying to flee the scene, seriously injuring the lower legs and ribs of a policeman. He and Mason were both treated at a local hospital for their injuries.

Mason escaped on foot and was later arrested. He was charged with criminal assault for the events following the death of his ex-wife, but no charges related to Fraser's death were laid.

In 2015, Mason pled guilty to attempted criminal assault and domestic violence and served nine months in prison. Police said Mason had hit his 20-year-old wife and stunned her face five times against the dash of a car while they were driving with their children. His injuries required reconstructive surgery. According to court documents, she sued him in civil court and obtained a judgment of $ 150,000.

Mason, a former state representative and senator, was removed from office about a month after the incident that occurred in August 2014. His convicted criminal status precludes him from sitting in the future as a as Ohio judge, and the Ohio Supreme Court also prohibited him indefinitely from practicing law.

However, Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson hired Mason in 2017 to assume the duties of city administrator in charge of minority administration.

Fraser was the niece of George C. Fraser, a well-known motivational speaker, who, in a statement to the WKYC, called her "a beloved, kind, and helpful woman of the community." She was a sixth grade teacher at Woodbury Elementary School in Shaker Heights and her two daughters with Mason attend the school system.

The Shaker Heights School District closed all its buildings on Monday and Tuesday to put grieving counselors at the disposal of students and staff.

The local teachers' association held a candlelight vigil in honor of Fraser at Woodbury Elementary on Monday and created a GoFundMe page in his honor.

Acting Superintendent Stephen M. Wilkins described Fraser's loss as "tragic".

"She has touched so many lives of our kids and we will miss her a lot," Wilkins said in a statement. "His loss is unexpected and the impact of this news on our entire school community is unimaginable and profound."
