A shootout in downtown Denver killed one person and injured four others on Monday afternoon as the police tried to find a fugitive suspect.
Police responded to reports of several gun shots on 21st Street and Lawrence Street, in the bustling LoDo neighborhood of downtown Denver, around 4:00 pm. Monday, a department official said at a press conference. The shooting took place a few blocks from Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies.
"It's too early in the investigation to be able to say exactly what happened here and why," Denver police spokesman Doug Schepman said Monday night. He added that the investigators collected witness statements and searched for video or photo evidence to identify one or more suspects.

Four injured victims
A victim was declared dead at the scene, according to Denver police, while four others were transported to hospitals in the area injured.
Schepman initially said they were in critical conditions, but the Denver police then said the wounds threatening life. "

Suspect in general
The gunman is not in custody and is still on the run, said Denver police spokesman Doug Schepman. Schepman said the police could not confirm the number of shots fired nor was there more than one gunman involved in the incident. No other details, including the possible motive of the shooter, are known at the moment.
"It is too early to say that the motive is there or what has happened until we have been able to gather all the information available," Schepman said. "The city center is obviously a very populated area, so having several shots fired in an area like this is quite disturbing."
The shooter used a handgun about half a dozen times on a group of homeless people before getting into a car and leaving, said witness Hisam Derani in Denver To post. A passer-by fired on the car as the shooter went off, said Derani.
Another homicide occurred Sunday a few blocks from Monday's shooting scene, but police said there was no reason to believe these incidents were related.
The seventh mass shooting of the year in Colorado
The Denver incident on Monday was the 315th mass shooting recorded so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a non-partisan research group. Another shooting in Philadelphia Monday, which claimed the lives of four people, brings to 316 the organization's total shooting so far in 2018. These incidents left 352 dead and 1,257 injured.
According to the GVA archives, the number of violent incidents in 2018 is comparable to that of last year: the group recorded 325 mass shootings during the same period in 2017.
According to the records, the shooting in Denver was Colorado's seventh so far this year. Six of these shootings took place in Denver, the seventh in Colorado Springs, where a sheriff's deputy was killed and three other offices injured in an incident in February.
