The California Highway Patrol has reopened Highway 99 heading south after a Saturday morning shootout that resulted in several collisions and a complete closure of the roadway, according to a press release issued by the department.
Highway 99 was closed just south of Highway 50 from 4 am to 10 am Saturday to allow an investigation of the incident. No one was injured in the shooting or in the collisions that resulted, said the CHP.
At around 3:45 pm, a Toyota Corolla carrying four people was heading south on Highway 99, near the exit of 12th Avenue, when a man in an unknown car started firing into the Corolla, a announced the CHP.
According to the press release, the driver and the three passengers of the Corolla stooped down, which resulted in the Corolla sweeping the guardrail off the road and building barrels. The car overturned and stopped in the middle of the traffic lanes.
Officers say Corolla drivers and passengers were able to get out of the vehicle and get to the center of the road.
A third car, a Nissan Altima, did not notice the car overturned in traffic lanes and collided with it, which caused the Corolla to roll over into the roadway. While the Corolla was spinning, she was hit by a Honda Accord.
According to the statement, two other vehicles then collided while avoiding collisions.
"We were very lucky that no one was injured," said CHP spokesman Jim Young.
The California Highway Patrol does not have a description of the vehicle involved in the shooting. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the CHP Communication Center at 916-861-1300.
