If we had announced in April what Bob Melvin and Oakland Athletics would do in the 2018 season, you would not have believed it. That they surpassed all expectations, take up the challenge of the AL West title, win nearly 100 games and participate in the playoffs.
But it happened. All. And now, Melvin is the AL Manager of the Year for the third time in his career.
Melvin has received 18 of the 30 first-place votes for the 2018 award, announced Tuesday the American Baseball Writers Association as part of the MLB Awards Week. Alex Cora, skipper of the Boston Red Sox, finished second with seven votes for first place and 11 votes for second place. Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash was third with five votes for first place.

Melvin had already won this award in 2007 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and in 2012 with the A. Lui and Joe Maddon are the only active managers to win this award three times. Just like Buck Showalter, the former Orioles director recently fired. Only Bobby Cox and Tony LaRussa – four times each – won the award more.
Important reminder on the vote: it includes only regular season performances, so the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series have no impact on the vote. Nevertheless, the results here will certainly hurt Boston fans, who will say that Cora deserved this award for his rookie season as a Red Sox manager.
There was no bad case among the finalists. The Cora affair was built on the victory of a franchise record of 108 games and the domination of AL East in the regular season. Cash, meanwhile, led a Rays team that held up well against the Yankees and Red Sox in the East American League despite the lack of talent and money. Money and shelves plunged into the idea of "bullpenning", traded Chris Archer in mid-season and had the second lowest payroll of MLB, while managing to win 90 games .
In the end, what Melvin and the A's did is simply perceived by voters as a more important – and surprisingly – success story, which is often where voters rely on this award. Melvin had the lowest baseball payroll but his team won 97 games. He had an exhausted formation that had not had a single pitcher since his rotation from the opening day to the end of the season. Instead, the A's depended on Edwin Jackson, Mike Fiers, and Brett Anderson – and not just eating sleeves, but keeping them in the post-season attack.
They've already shot a movie about A.'s expectations. They're doing another one, it may just include Melvin, who has won the title of year manager.
