In the azure waters of the coast of New Zealand, a primitive scene unfolded.
A seal had an octopus in its teeth, the eight-limbed mollusk flapping its wing, fighting for its life. Then a kayaker – bright yellow boat and lifejacket, cap, sunglasses and everything – entered the race.
He paid the price of intruding into the animal kingdom because the group of sailors was caught in a marine brawl.
"Under the water?" Asked one of the participants at the ride.

They spoke too soon, as the seal passed through the water, crossed the surface and hit Kyle Mulinder in the face with the octopus.
"It was like a wet towel but with a little toughness," said Mulinder, a 37-year-old Instragrammer from the small farming town of Norsewood..
"Bad place, good time", he wrote on Instagram, where he posted a video of the meeting, which took place on Saturday near Kaikoura, a coastal town on the south island of New Zealand. "Yes, I was slapped with an octopus by the seal!"
Mulinder's reaction was a jerk of the head and a roaring roar. In an interview with the Washington Post, he offered more details than GoPro's now viral video allowed, claiming that the slippery slap hardly mitigated a fun day.
To test the new GoPro Hero 7 model, he went with a group to Kaikoura, an area famous for its wildlife. They were about 60 feet from the shore when they saw a "giant seal fighting an octopus, which is great, crazy".
They watched the fight in joy about 30 feet apart. "You do not approach that kind of thing," he said.
"And all of a sudden, the show goes silent and the seal goes under the water, and you say to yourself, 'Well, that's it,'" said Mulinder. "Then we turn to us, like" Oh my God, here it is ".
The persistent mystery, wrote Mulinder on Instagram, was the most surprised by the episode: human, seal or octopus? Maybe it was the octopus, because the creature of the sea stood at the bottom of his kayak for a while, he said, before his guide was able to chase it with a paddle.
"A true story," he said.
This is a story that has so pleased online audiences, he said, that he receives many requests from the media. Even his parents were caught in the deluge, telephoning enthusiastic viewers.
"It's really crazy. It's getting a bit exhausting now, "said Mulinder. "I'm getting to the point where I say I want to go to bed."
