A small private plane carrying three people crashed into the ocean off the Long Island coast on Saturday, officials said.
A body was found as a result of the 11-hour accident of the Piper PA-34, a twin engine about a mile from Quogue in the Hamptons.
Agencies such as the US Coast Guard, the New York National Air Guard and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident.
"We are still looking for and recovering," said Christopher Isola, police chief of the village of Quogue, at a press conference held Saturday afternoon, according to Newsday. "The Coast Guard, along with other marine assets, will continue this effort." The cause of the accident was not known, said Isola. The identity of the victim found was not determined immediately.
Officials said that people on the beach reported that the plane had been sprayed before it crashed.
John Morgan, of Quogue, told Newsday that his 24-year-old son, Tyler Morgan, was golfing with friends when he saw the plane crush.
"They saw it in the air and they just saw it coming down," said John Morgan, who went to the beach after the accident and saw several research boats on the # 39; water. The plane departed the Connecticut Waterbury-Oxford Airport on Saturday morning, landed at Danbury Municipal Airport, and then took off again.
The plane was heading to the Charleston Executive Airport in South Carolina, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are going to investigate, he said.
This was the third fatal accident involving a small plane on Long Island this year. A pilot died on May 30 when his collector's plane fell into a wooded area.
Four people were killed on June 2 when a twin – engine Navajo Piper crashed off Amagansett during a storm.
