An American soldier, who according to the Justice Department has "effectively ended" the careers of two others after detonating a homemade chemical bomb near Fort Polk, Louisiana, will spend the next 11 years in jail.
The 135-month sentence, followed by five years of probation, was awarded to Ryan Keith Taylor on Monday after he pleaded guilty to making, possessing and detonating a chemical weapon in the Kisatchie National Forest in April. 2017.
"Those who serve our country risk their lives every day to protect us. They should not be endangered unnecessarily, "said David C. Joseph, US District Attorney Western Louisiana, in a statement. "The chemical weapon created by the accused in this case is prohibited by international and national laws because of its terrible effects on the human body."
Taylor, 24, was first reported to the military police after three soldiers conducting a training exercise in the area filmed him with his mobile phone. The apparatus he made, according to the Department of Justice, contained chlorine.
An investigator who responded to the scene had problems after putting a "rock coated with an unknown substance" in a plastic bag as part of the evidence gathering.
"The bag immediately jumped and the investigator's plastic gloves and boots began to melt," the Justice Department said in a statement. "He also started having trouble breathing and his skin started to burn."
The investigators say they also "found bomb-making notes, materials and chemical residues in Taylor's vehicle, apartment and warehouse" during the raids.
Another investigator reportedly inhaled and touched some of the residue, sending him to the hospital.
"The two victims who inhaled the chlorine gas were treated several times for their injuries and ended their military career," concluded the Justice Department.
