In South Carolina, a 23-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison after "biting" the lip of his ex-girlfriend so hard that she broke loose, officials said.

Seth Aaron Fleury pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge of assault and aggravated assault, announced 13th Circuit Attorney, Walt Wilkins, in a press release.

On October 21, 2017, Fleury was scheduled to meet her ex-girlfriend to "discuss their relationship," Wilkins said. However, this resulted in a disagreement.

Fleury was angry when her former partner did not want to meet and he tried to kiss her, the press release said.

"She stepped aside and bit her lower lip with such force that her lip was amputated," says the press release, after which he fled the area.

The doctors tried to "stick their lips together" during an "emergency plastic surgery," but their attempts were unsuccessful, Wilkins said. The woman now endures "severe, permanent scarring and limited and permanent range of movement in her mouth," the press release said.

"This case shows the unique circumstances in which domestic violence occurs and the speed with which these situations can escalate into violence," Wilkins said in a press release. "Hopefully, this prison sentence will make it clear to both the accused and other abusers that domestic violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances."

Fleury will not be eligible for parole until at least 85% of her prison term is over, according to the press release.
