Stingrays are generally not aggressive and fatal attacks on humans are rare

A 42-year-old man died after an alleged attack of rays on the Tasmanian coast, Australian police said.

They said that the man had developed cardiac arrest after "puncturing his lower abdomen" in Lauderdale Beach.

According to the statement, the injury was "inflicted by a marine animal". Officials told local media that this was consistent with a sting attack.

Stingrays are not considered dangerous, although an Australian ecologist killed Steve Irwin in 2006.

Known as the "crocodile hunter" after his wildlife television show, Irwin died when a line of sting stabbed him in the heart.

Recently, however, new shark attacks have been reported in Australia and the Tasmanian police wanted to point out that the incident in Lauderdale Beach was not related to sharks.
